Park planning pottery program

Visitors to the Poverty Point World Heritage Site are invited to take part in a ranger-led demonstration July 7  of crafting prehistoric-styled pottery similar to the pieces which the Native Americans fashioned more than 3,500 years ago. 

The event will begin with the demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Afterward, visitors can try their hand at making their own pottery until noon.

Attendees can try their hand at creating items such as figurines, decorated artistic objects, coiled clay pots, and clay pipes – inspired by those that have been excavated from the site.

Burglary investigations have led to arrests for the Delhi Police Department.
The Delhi Police Department and Madison Parish Sheriff Office worked a joint investigation involving a stolen lap top computer June 24.
Delhi Police Department arrested Benny Claiborne Baker, 30, of HWY 2, Sterlington, for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute when Baker was found to have four grams of Methamphetamine on his person.
Baker was transported to the Richland Parish Detention Center and booked pending bond.
Delhi Police Chief Roy Williams would like to thank Assistant Chief Jermaine Esters, Narcotics Investigator Craig Frasier and Major Kevin McCall of Delhi the Delhi Police Department and deputies Chad Ezell and Powers of Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office for their hard work in this arrest.
Earlier in the week, the Delhi Police Department received a complaint in reference to a burglary of a residence on Chicago Street.
Assistant Chief Esters conducted an investigation and determined that Richard Wayne Polly was the suspect who committed the burglary.
Polly, of 695 Section Road, Delhi, was arrested and charged with burglary and transported to the Richland Parish Detention Center pending a $25,000 bond.

Larry Wright’s epic basketball journeys always seemed to reach the same destination. 

No matter where he played, from Richwood High School to Grambling and into professional ball, Wright was always part of teams that won big. 

“Winning has always been number one for me since I can remember starting to play at an early age,” Wright said. “Even as a small kid going to the rec center, winning was always the number one deal with me.”

Sales tax rate set to drop

Effective July 1, Louisiana’s overall state sales tax rate decreases from 5 percent to 4.45 percent.

The new rate, enabled by House Bill 10 of the 2018 Third Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature, is to be levied upon the sale at retail, the use, the consumption, the distribution and the lease or rental of an item of tangible personal property; and upon the sale of services.

Any dealer that charges a 5 percent state sales tax rate on or after July 1 must remit the excess collected tax to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

Kiwanis Club seeks nominations for Aycock award

Nominations for the fifth Annual Sellers Aycock Jr., Service Award are now open.

Any man or woman in Richland Parish whose achievements, leadership and service have been accomplished for the benefit of the community is eligible to be nominated.

The nominee does not have to be a member of the Rayville Kiwanis Club, but must be a resident of Richland Parish. 

The selection committee, chosen on a confidential basis, is comprised of citizens of the community and is appointed by the Aycock Awards Committee sponsored by the Rayville Kiwanis Club.
