Kiwanis Club seeks nominations for Aycock award

The deadline for nominations for the fifth Annual Sellers Aycock Jr., Service Award is drawing near.

All nominations must be received by the Rayville Kiwanis Aycock Awards Committee by Sept. 28. The winner will be announced at a special awards banquet held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the First United Methodist Church in Rayville.

Nomination forms are available by calling Bob Kidd at 322-6600 or by contacting any member of the Kiwanis Club.

‘The Road Not Taken’ leads to better literacy instruction

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”

Perhaps you are familiar with these lines from Robert Frost’s famous poem, “The Road Not Taken.”  Recently, teachers from around the state gathered together in New Orleans from July 23-26 and debated the meaning of this poem.  Why?  To improve English Language Arts instruction.

Jobless rate rises slightly in Richland Parish

The unemployment rate for Richland Parish rose somewhat in June according to the latest figures released by the Louisiana Works Commission.

The parish unemployment rate for June rose to 7.5 percent from 6.1 percent in May. 

This is also higher than the 6.7 percent registered in June 2017. 

This means 638 people were looking for work in Richland Parish in June, up from 508 in May and 577 a year ago. In all, 7,856 people were employed in the parish in June, up from 7,929 in May, but down from 8,069 a year ago.

D.A.R.E. officers enjoy family night at training

Richland Parish Sheriff Gary Gilley and Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell co-hosted Family Night July 18 at the Louisiana Purchase Garden and Zoo for the 27th Annual Training Conference of the Louisiana D.A.R.E. Officers Association. 

R.P.S.O. and O.P.S.O. served hamburgers and hot dogs to more than 400 D.A.R.E Officers and their families.

R.P.S.O also entered the new D.A.R.E. Unit in the annual car show held at every conference.
