Summer food program to run through Dec. 18

 The Richland Parish School Board is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.

Meals will be provided to all eligible children without charge. 

Meals will be provided at all schools until Dec. 18 under the program.

For specific dates and times, call the numbers listed below:

• Delhi High School for DHS and Delhi Elementary students, 878-9425.

• Delhi Middle School, 878-3332.

• Holly Ridge Elementary School, 728-5597.

• Mangham Elementary School, 248-2569.

Sheldon Jones named superintendent of year

The Louisiana Association of School Superintendents has named Sheldon Jones, superintendent of the Richland Parish School Board, as the 2021 Louisiana Superintendent of the Year. 

“I am humbled to receive this honor from my peers and will use this platform to elevate public education in Richland Parish and northeast Louisiana,” Jones said. “We are fortunate to have outstanding board members, students, parents, employees, and community supporters in Richland Parish.”

Mangham police officer dies

Mangham Police Officer Marshall Waters died early Nov. 5 after being shot in the line of duty last month.

"It’s with great sadness and broken hearts that I and the Mangham Police Department have to inform you of the passing of Officer Marshall Waters, PD3, who was shot in the line of duty on Oct. 17, 2020." Mangham Police Chief Perry Fleming said in a statement. "We ask that you please continue to pray for Marshall Waters family and the Mangham Police Department family during this time."

Richland unemployment rate dips in September

The Richland Parish unemployment rate fell slightly in September according to figures release by the Louisiana Works Commission.

Richland Parish’s rate fell from 7.5 percent in August to 7.3 percent in September. It’s up from 6.3 percent in September 2019.

That means 608 people were looking for jobs in the parish in September, as opposed to 619 in August and 520 a year ago.

Overall, 7,688 people were employed in the parish in September as opposed to 7,689 in August and 7.766 a year ago.
