Ville Platte man arrested in Mangham police officer's shooting

A Ville Platte man has been arrested for the attempted murder of a Mangham police officer.

Rayville Police Chief said Willie Robinson said the incident began Oct. 17 when the Rayville Police Department received a phone call from Yancey’s Pharmacy advising that an armed robbery had taken place. 

RPD Officer Darius Williams was dispatched to the location. 

Upon arrival, Williams, he made contact with the victim, who advised that while he was locking up, a black male with a gun approached him. 

Activist trucker targets Salvation’s Cross

An Alabama truck driver would like to see Rayville’s Salvation Cross come down.

Patrick Greene, 72, of Montgomery, Ala., said he’d like to see the 110-foot cross taken down as a tribute to his wife who died last January.

“We’re both atheists and she had been treated very badly by Christians throughout her life,” Greene said.

Greene said his own family had stayed away from their wedding because two of his wife’s gay friends had been in the wedding party.

West Monroe man dies in car accident

A West-Monroe man was killed in a one-vehicle accident near Holly Ridge on Sunday.

Shortly before 10:20 p.m. Oct. 11, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a crash on US Hwy 80 just west of LA Hwy 183. 

The initial investigation revealed a 2014 Ford F150 driven by 38-year-old Dillon Dust was traveling westbound on US Hwy 80.  For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck a large tree.

Riverfield Academy homecoming events slated

Riverfield Academy will host the Clinton Christian Warriors for Homecoming at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.

This year’s theme is Dominating Through The Decades. The pep rally will be Oct. 22 at the stadium. Homecoming presentation will be 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Riverfield Academy Football Stadium. Coronation of this year’s Queen Sterling Head will take place at presentation.

The pre-game procession of the Queen, Maids, Princess and Crown Bearer will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23. Halftime presentation will take place on Joe Meeks Field.

Richland Parish preschools now rated as highly proficient

The preschool sites at Mangham, Rayville and Start elementary schools all received higher performance scores for the 2019-2020 school year. 

Each of these sites are now categorized as highly proficient. 

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department extended the 2018-2019 performance scores and ratings for an additional year. However, sites with a higher 2019-2020 performance score were given the opportunity to opt-in to receive an updated performance profile based on 2019-2020 results.
