Alumni honor history

The Rayville Rosenwald/Eula D. Britton Alumni Association will celebrate Black History Month with an open house Feb. 17 at the alumni center.

Browsing and fellowship will begin at 1 p.m. and the program will begin at 2 p.m.

Richland jobless rate barely rises in December

The unemployment rate for Richland Parish barely rose in December.

The unemployment rate inched up from 5.1 percent in November 2017 to 5.2 percent in December 2017. Both numbers are down from the 6.6 percent recorded in December 2017.

This translates into 437 people looking for work in the parish in December, up from 420 in November but down from 540 a year ago.

The total workforce for Richland Parish was 7,965 in December, up from 7,893 in November and 7,677 a year ago.

Marengo Swamp Ride canceled over road issues

Wish I Could of NELA has announced it will no longer host the Marengo Swamp Ride at the Boeuf River WMA. 

Wish I Could issues a statement saying: “Due to road improvements made over the last year and lack of support from the department of wildlife and fisheries a decision was made to no longer have the ride. If you would like to make a complaint contact your local State Representative or Wild Life and Fisheries. We want to thank the State of Louisiana for supporting us and allowing us to put on the Marengo Swamp ride on for the past 32 years.

Livestock Show honors James

This year’s Northeast Louisiana Livestock Show is dedicated to Joseph Truman James Jr.

The Stockshow parade will kick off this weekend’s events with live music at 9 a.m. before the parade begins at 10 a.m. on Friday.

He was born 78 years ago and has been a lifelong resident of Waterproof in Tensas Parish. 

James graduated from LSU in 1961 with a degree in agricultural engineering and was married to wife, Frances, for over 51 years.
