Tensas voters elect local, state officials Nov. 3

Tensas Parish voters faced a full slate of candates when they went to the polls Nov. 3.

In local elections, Matthew Alexander won the race for St. Joseph mayor by 62 percent with 329 votes to Vivian Hiner’s 120 and Diane Yarrington’s 78.

In the race for St. Joseph alderman in District A, John Lewis won by 63 percent with 40 votes to Undrea Hodge’s 24.

New grant cycle opens

Northeast Louisiana Power Cooperative has a program which offers grants to nonprofit organizations within NELPCO’s service area.

Local nonprofits are invited to submit applications for grants through NELPCO’s Operation Round Up. The deadline for the current grant cycle is 4:45 p.m.  Nov. 30.

AgCenter seeks people for marketing survey

The LSU AgCenter is looking for SNAP-eligible Tensas Parish residents to take part in a survey about social marketing in Louisiana.

The purpose of this study is to identify the preferences of the rural population for five different nutrition messages and five messengers.  Louisiana residents of rural parishes who are at least 18 years old and SNAP-eligible are encouraged to participate.  Participants may enter a raffle for a $100 gift card to Walmart after completion of the survey.

Help for small businesses

Small businesses urged to apply for CARES grants

State Treasurer John Schroder and District. 34 Sen. Katrina Jackson were in St. Joseph last Wednesday to encourage Louisiana business owners to apply for up to $15,000 in grants from the CARES Act to help them recover from COVID-19 related expenses.

“Our small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and they’re hurting because of the financial impact of COVID-19,” Schroder said. “I encourage every small business owner to visit our website, take the eligibility quiz and apply if they meet the requirements. We don’t want our businesses to close. We want them to thrive.”

Full slate of candidates qualify for Nov. 3 elections

Candidates qualified for state and local positions in Tensas Parish recently. 

Those running for the position of District Judge 6th Judicial District Court, Div. A are Angela L. Claxton, Democrat, Tallulah; and Linda Watson, Democrat, St. Joseph.

Those running for the position of District Judge 6th Judicial District Court, Div. B are Laurie Brister, no party, Lake Providence; and Joy Jackson, Democrat, Tallulah.
