Scott scholarships awarded

The John H. Scott Memorial Fund held a virtual scholarship award ceremony May 2.

Seven scholars were represented this year. They are Amahry Jackson of  Newellton who attends Tensas High School and  Westley Bowman, TaNoah Hampton, Destiny Jones, Karvan Powell Jr., Aalayah Scott and Zakara Williams, all of General Trass High School.

Tracy L. Reynolds of Lake Providence was awarded the Alease J. Scott Memorial Award. 

Tensas Parish jobless rate increases to 12.1%

Unemployment rose sharply in Tensas Parish in March according to figures release this week by the Louisiana Works commission.

The jobless rate for Tensas Parish rose from 8.8 percent in in February to 12.1 percent in March. It is also up from 6.3 percent in March 2019.

That translates into 175 people being out of work in Tensas Parish last month as opposed to 120 in February and 86 a year ago.

The Tensas Parish workforce was up to 1,266 people in March, up from 1,241 people in February and down from 1,287 a year ago.

Louisiana College to offer free tuition scholarship

Responding to pandemic-induced financial strains, Louisiana College will offer free tuition to eligible, incoming freshmen and transfer students through its newly established Governor Jimmie Davis Scholarship.

“We recognize the Coronavirus impact has curtailed and even stopped certain activities in our state,” Louisiana College president Dr Rick Brewer said. “But we do not intend to stop offering the quality liberal arts education that has typified the College since 1906.”

CARES Act offers help with paying utility bills

Cleco is encouraging eligible customers who need help paying their electric utility bills to apply for supplemental funds added to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program  as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.

LIHEAP, a federally funded program, helps low-income households with their home energy bills by providing payment and/or energy crisis assistance.  Each state receives funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, so programs vary by state.
