Full slate of candidates qualify for Nov. 3 elections

Candidates qualified for state and local positions in Tensas Parish recently. 

Those running for the position of District Judge 6th Judicial District Court, Div. A are Angela L. Claxton, Democrat, Tallulah; and Linda Watson, Democrat, St. Joseph.

Those running for the position of District Judge 6th Judicial District Court, Div. B are Laurie Brister, no party, Lake Providence; and Joy Jackson, Democrat, Tallulah.

New manager settles in at wildlife refuge

Christopher Cooley has taken the reins as the new refuge manager for Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. 

“I wanted to have an opportunity to have a greater impact on the conservation of wildlife and natural resources,” Cooley said. “I see working in the National Wildlife Refuge System as an opportunity to make a difference for both wildlife and people. “

Optimist Club celebrates 50 years of service

Organized on Jan. 13, 1970, in the home of Aletha Mae Bellows Carter in Newellton, the Optimist Club marked 50 years of service to the community this year.

There were 18 ladies attending the first meeting. The Optimist Club name was given by the Late Matilda Jackson. Clara Bass served as the first president of the Optimist Club. The Optimist Club colors are navy blue and white.

Davis earns law degree, passes bar in Kentucky

Kalisa Nikia Davis received her Juris Doctor from Salmon P. Chase College of Law on May 10, 2019. 

She took the Kentucky Bar Exam in July and passed. Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Michelle M. Keller swore in Davis on Oct. 21, 2019. Davis attributes all of her success to God, who has been training her since she was ten to begin a journey she never imagined she would travel. 

LDWF investigating boating accident in Tensas Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a boating fatality that occurred on July 3 in Tensas Parish.

LDWF agents recovered the body of Allen K. Wallace, 62, of Bogue Chitto, Miss., at 11:30 a.m. on July 5 from the Mississippi River.

Agents were notified around 6 p.m. on July 4 about a stranded woman on the banks of the Mississippi River near the town of St. Joseph. LDWF agents were able to rescue the 52-year-old woman from Bogue Chitto, Miss., around 7 p.m.
