Newellton parade canceled due to COVID-19 concerns

The Easter Parade Committee has canceled the 2021 Easter Parade held annually in Newellton.

Out of an abundance of caution, the members of the committee felt it necessary to cancel the parade due to COVID-19 and its related restrictions.

“The safety of our citizens and participants is our greatest concern,” committee spokesperson Aletha Carter said. “We are looking forward to continuing the community fellowship event in 2022.”

The Easter Parade is an annual community event supported by local churches and citizens throughout the parish and beyond.

Tensas Academy Spring Carnival set March 27

Tensas Academy will host its 2021 Spring Carnival on March 27.

Activities will feature online bidding this year leading up to the carnival. The Gourmet Shoppe and Silent Auction begin at 10 a.m. Bidding ends for the Silent Auction at noon. The big raffle drawings will be at noon as well. 

The BBQ Babes will be selling BBQ beef lunches “brown bag style” this year from 10 a.m. to noon.

The live auction will be held at the school March 27. 

Fire district reports activities for February

Tensas Parish Fire District No. 1 responded to five calls during the month of February.

They consisted of one false alarm, one service call, one brush fire, one structure fire and one emergency medical services call.

In addition, firefighters underwent classroom training with the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute.

LSU-FETI instructor Johnny Ogden presented a class on Driving Fire Apparatus Feb. 8. Those in attendance received three credit hours each.

Tensas research station to host soil health forum

The LSU AgCenter Northeast Research Station will host a soil health forum on March 17. 

 The forum is supported by the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation and National Resource Conservation Service. The Patrick F. Taylor Foundation awarded a grant to the LSU AgCenter to fund a four-year research project on reducing nutrient runoff from crop fields.

The primary goal of the forum is to highlight and demonstrate best management practices to improve water quality and soil health, while simultaneously increasing productivity and soil sustainability.
