Alumni sponsor family movie night

Family movie night will continue at the Rayville Rosenwald/Eula D. Britton Alumni Center with Hidden Figures.

The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. July 6 at the alumni center, 103 Cotton St., Rayville.

Admission, popcorn and soft drinks are free. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of the event.

Hidden Figures is the story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henderson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), the three African American women who were the brains behind astronaut John Glen’s launch into orbit.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrests by Delhi officer

A traffic stop netted two drug arrests Saturday in Delhi.

Delhi Police Officer Tyrone Williams made a traffic stop at 7:39 p.m. June 29 to pick up Keymoshon Washington for an outstanding warrant. 

Williams arrested Washington and during the search of his person, one gram of cocaine was found in his shoe. In addition, Washington’s vehicle did not have proper registration and insurance. A search of the vehicle was conducted and five ounces of marijuana was found. 

Washington was charged an outstanding warrant and possession of cocaine.

Board helps Richland get ready to work

Workforce Development Board 83 held Lunch-n-Learns in Delhi and Bastrop  in May to further inform area workforce recruiters and employers on the ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate  Program.   

The Work Ready program assists regions and states with developing a workforce pipeline to provide skilled workers for employers by using the ACT WorkKeys System. 

Fire Marshal offers tips for safe Fourth of July

As another fireworks sales season begins, the State Fire Marshal’s Office wants to encourage all Louisiana residents to not only be safe when using fireworks, but knowledgeable when buying them.

More than 500 retail fireworks permits have been issued for the 2019 Fourth of July season, as it is state law for wholesale and retail fireworks business operators to be appropriately licensed by the SFM, in the parishes and municipalities where they are legally allowed.  The sales season extends through July 4.

Fan drive helps seniors keep cool

The Richland Voluntary Council on Aging is hosting its annual fan drive. 

The fans will be used to help the elderly during these extremely high heat levels.

Donations of fans, or money for the Council on Aging to purchase fans, can be made at the Richland Council on Aging, 414 Harrison Street, Rayville, between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

The Delhi COA can accept donations during their business hours of 9 a.m. and noon Mondays through Fridays.
