Governor leads task force meeting on dual enrollment

Gov. John Bel Edwards was in Rayville July 24 to welcome members to a meeting of the Dual Enrollment Framework Task Force.

Dual enrollment programs allow high school students to earn college credits by taking college classes before they graduate.

The Task Force reviews existing laws, policies and efforts in Louisiana and other states on dual enrollment, course choice, student remediation, articulation and transfer, and transition courses; consider any dual enrollment recommendations from the College and Career Readiness Commission

Qualifying slated for fall elections

Qualifying for the Oct. 12 elections will take place Aug. 6-8 in Richland Parish.

Local elections will include sheriff, clerk of court, assessor, coroner, police juror in districts 1 through 9, and justice of the peace in Ward 2.

Statewide offices will include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and forestry and commissioner of insurance.

Delhi plans Rummage in the Park

The Town of Delhi will host Rummage in the Park from 7 a.m. to noon Aug. 3.

The town is seeking community support to make the event a huge success. 

If you have been meaning to have a rummage sale and have not taken out the time, let the Town of Delhi help you out. Claim your spot in the community wide rummage sale. 

The vendor fee is $10. The town will provide one table for setup with additional tables at $5 each. The town council would like to make this a tradition.

Deputies earn award for volunteer service

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Education Section presented Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office Captain Randy Swain and Reserve Deputy Randy Ogles with an award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for Hunter Safety and Firearms Training.  

“Deputies Swain and Ogles have over 23 years of combined experience teaching hundreds of our parish youth Hunter Safety and Firearms Training,” Richland Parish Sheriff Gary Gilley said. “We are very fortunate to have these deputies volunteering to educate our youth.”

Man sentenced to 30 years for indecent behavior

District Attorney John M. “Mack” Lancaster advised that on July 17, Henry Heath,  45, of Bastrop, was sentenced to a total of 30 years on twenty counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile who was between the ages of 14-17 years old at the time the crimes occurred.  

This sentence was a result of a complaint filed in 2017 at the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office against Heath.
