Kindergarten registration set for Richland Parish schools

Richland Parish Schools will host kindergarten registration from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9-13.

Children must be five years old on or before Sept. 30 to register. Parents must bring their child’s social security card, birth certificate, completed shot record and three proofs of residence.

Parents are encouraged to participate in this registration so that preparations can be made for their child in the 2020-2021 school.

Seminar to aid gardeners

The LSU AgCenter will host a spring horticulture seminar March 4 at the Scott Research and Extension Center in Winnsboro.

The program is part of a semiannual series of educational and training opportunities geared for home gardeners, landscapers and nursery operators.

Registration is $10 per person, and lunch will be provided. The program will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at noon.

Presentations will include how to identify common insect and disease pests in the home garden and pruning techniques for fruit trees.

Donation helps Delhi protect K-9 officer

The Delhi Police Department K-9 officer will be better protected on duty thanks to a donation from Royal Recognition in Wisconsin.

The company donated $1,100 to the Delhi Police Department to cover the cost of providing a ballistic vest for the police dog.

Delhi Police Chief roy Williams said the company primarily donates to police departments around Wisconsin. However, his  K-9 handler was able to  get in touch with Royal Recognition representatives through LinkedIn in order to secure the donation.

Richland jobless rate rises by .3 percent

Richland Parish’s unemployment rate rose slightly in December according to the latest figures from the Louisiana Works Commission.

Richland’s unemployment rose from 6.6 percent in November 2019 to 6.9 percent in December 2019. That’s also up from the 5.7 percent recorded in December 2018.

This translates to 561 people looking for work in the parish in December, up from 533 the month before and 467 a year earlier.

In all, 7,514 people were working in Richland Parish in December, down from 7,563 in November and 7,702 a year ago.

School choice application dates announced

The Richland Parish School Board will continue to offer School Choice transfer options to students who are enrolled in schools receiving a letter grade of D or F for the upcoming school year. 

All School Choice applications must be received from Feb. 18 to April 3. The window for submission of Open Enrollment transfer applications will be from April 6 to May 15.  No applications will be accepted after these deadlines.
