Program benefits farmers

Louisiana cotton farmers now have access to the Cotton Ginning Cost Share  program thanks to a policy change by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a change that Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, has long advocated for.

USDA Sec. Sonny Perdue announced the program over the weekend. Cotton producers may receive a cost share payment based on the producer’s 2016 cotton acres reported to the Farm Service Agency, which is administering the program. The sign-up period for the program runs from March 12 to May 11.

Terry Doughty confirmed as federal judge

Louisiana Fifth District Judge Terry Doughty has been confirmed to take a seat on the federal bench by the U.S. Senate.

Doughty’s nomination to serve as a federal judge on the U.S. Western District of Louisiana Court was approved unanimously by a 98-0 vote.

Doughty is the Division A judge of the Fifth Judicial District in Louisiana. He was elected to this position in July of 2008 (effective the following January) to replace retired Judge Glenn W. Strong.

Delhi Bears end season as state 1A runners up

The Delhi Bears finished their season as the state Class 1A runner ups Friday after falling to state champion White Castle 64-42. 

The win gave White Castle back to back state championships as well as their seventh state title. 

Abdell Phillips and Tyler Washington each had 11 points for the Bears. The bears ended the season with a 26-10 record after posting their second appearance in the state tournament.
