Richland Parish jobless rate takes dip in February

The unemployment rate for Richland Parish fell from 5.8 percent to 5.6 percent in February according to the latest figures from the Louisiana Works Commission.

The rate is down from 6.8 percent in February 2017.

This translates into 468 people looking for work in Richland Parish in February, which is down from 485 in January and 561 a year ago.

Currently, Richland Parish’s labor force is 7,923 people, up from 7,843 in January and 7,687 in February.

Jefferson Davis and LaSalle parishes tied at 3.8 percent for the state’s lowest unemployment.

Richland patients urged to be on lookout for new medical cards

Beginning in April, the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services has begun mailing new Medicare cards to all people with medicare.

A new alpha-numeric identifier will replace the current social security number-based identifier. this roll-out will occur over a several month period, based upon the geographic location of the medicare beneficiary. 

There are concerns that people might believe that this is a “scam,” and therefore, will ignore notifications or throw new identification cards away.

Meeting slated to discuss urgent needs for workers in Delhi area

The City of Delhi, Hydro Extrusion (formerly Sapa), Lamb Weston, Louisiana Delta Community College and Workforce Development Board 83 (WDB 83) will be reaching out to area residents to make them aware of the grave employment needs of Hydro and Lamb Weston.

“The problem they’re running into is that the people they’re hiring are from outside areas. When they get other employment closer to their home, they quit,” explains Dean Baugh, Director of Workforce and Economic Development. “What we want to do is train the local residents to fill their empty slots.”

Rayville, Delhi elect officials, renew taxes

Harry Lewis was re-elected as Rayville mayor and Delhi votes renewed two sales ataxes this weekend.

Lewis was elected mayor of Rayville by 58 percent with 342 votes. Morgan Moss Jr., received 219 votes for 37 percent and Cassius Clay Muhammad received 25 votes for four percent.

Rayville votes also elected five aldermen. Six people ran ofr the positions with the top five winning.

Timothy Tennant received 393 votes for 19.5 percent.

Valerie Allen got 360 votes for 17.9 percent.

Jerry Gordon got 352 votes for 17.5 percent.

Hornet boosters raising funds to support team

The Rayville High School men’s basketball team, fresh off of winning the Louisiana Class 2A basketball championship, has received a well deserved helping hand from a group of citizens and businesses who have joined together as the Hornet Basketball Boosters to raise funds for the team and its coaching staff.

The Hornets, who blazed through the season finishing 35-0, have been said by many sports authorities around the state as possibly the best team in any class this year.
