Sales tax holiday to benefit storm, COVID-19 victims

A state sales tax holiday to provide relief for Louisiana residents recovering from hurricanes Laura and Delta, in addition to the COVID-19 public health emergency, will take place Nov. 20-21.

Act 16 of the 2020 Second Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature exempts the first $2,500 of most consumer purchases from the 4.45 percent state sales tax. The exemption applies to in-store purchases as well as transactions completed online or by telephone.

Eligible transactions include:

• Buying and accepting delivery of tangible personal property;

Early voting set for Dec. 5

Richland Parish Registrar of Voters Carol Morgan would like to remind voters early Voting for the Dec. 5 election will be held Nov. 20-28, excluding Nov. 22, Nov. 26 Nov. 27.

The hours of early voting will be 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Please bring proper identification.

In addition to early voting, if eligible, voters may request a mail ballot. Voters may obtain a form from the Registrar of Voters Office or www.sos.la.gov.

There will be two items on the Dec. 5 ballot in Richland parish.

Summer food program to run through Dec. 18

 The Richland Parish School Board is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.

Meals will be provided to all eligible children without charge. 

Meals will be provided at all schools until Dec. 18 under the program.

• Holly Ridge Elementary School, 728-5597.

Sheldon Jones named superintendent of year

The Louisiana Association of School Superintendents has named Sheldon Jones, superintendent of the Richland Parish School Board, as the 2021 Louisiana Superintendent of the Year. 

“I am humbled to receive this honor from my peers and will use this platform to elevate public education in Richland Parish and northeast Louisiana,” Jones said. “We are fortunate to have outstanding board members, students, parents, employees, and community supporters in Richland Parish.”
