Chief unopposed in Rayville election

Rayville Police Chief Willie Robinson will serve another term in office after running unopposed for re-election.

Qualifying for the police chief’s election in Rayville ended Friday with Robinson as the only candidate on the ballot.

Meanwhile, incumbent mayor Harry Lewis will face two challengers for his position in the March 24 municipal election.

He is being challenged by Morgan Moss Jr. of the Green Party and Cassius Clay Muhammad who is running as an independent.

Six candidates are running for the five seats on the Rayville Town Council. 

Investigation yields results

Richland Parish deputies concluded a lengthy narcotics investigation Dec. 27 which resulted in two arrests.

Deputies came into contact with Demario D. Jackson of Rayville. Jackson had an outstanding warrant with the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office and after he was arrested for the warrant, deputies recovered approximately one half ounce of suspected marijuana from his person.

Richland Parish jobless rate rises slightly

Unemployment in Richland Parish rose slightly during November according to figures released by the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

The jobless rate in Richland Parish rose from 4.7 percent in October to 5 percent in November. It was, however, down from 6.2 percent a year ago.

This means 419 people were looking for work in November, up from 390 in October, but down from 512 a year ago.

There were 7,894 people employed in Richland Parish in November, up from 7,894 in October but up from 7,740 a year ago.

Drugs, stolen car seized by Rayville police

A disturbance at a local truck stop led to a drug arrest recently.

Rayville Police Chief Willie Robinson said Office Quatez White was sent to investigate a disturbance at 6:36 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Rayville Pilot.

White spoke with Terri Swepston, who claimed her daughter, Angela Swepston Valdez, had assaulted her with a Coke bottle when they stopped at the gas station. She also claimed her daughter was high and had drugs in the bed of the truck in which they were traveling.
