Delhi will host volunteer clean-up day

In partnership with the Keep Louisiana Beautiful - Love The Boot campaign, the Town of Delhi will hold its community clean-up on April 23.

“We are asking for all individuals, churches, groups, organizations, businesses, etc., to come out to support our efforts,” Delhi Mayor Jesse Washington said. 

Participants should meet at 8 a.m. April 23 at Delhi Town Hall to sign and delegate targeted areas to focus on during the day.

Storms disrupt traffic, electricity

High straight line winds and two tornadoes swept through Richland Parish last week.

No lives were lost, but the storms downed trees and power lines, disrupting traffic and electricity throughout the parish.  Entergy reported more than 1,000 people without electricity, mostly in the area between Rayville and Girard.

The U.S. National Weather Service reported a weak tornado touching down in a wooded area off Horace Moore Road before moving northeast along the bayou through Start.

Rayville mayor named to environmental panel

Gov. John Bel Edwards has appointed Rayville Mayor Harry Lewis to the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission.

The mission of the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission is to create a balanced statewide environmental education program for the purpose of identifying the needs and setting priorities for environmental education within the state.

Lewis, who was an educator and principal of Rayville High School before being elected as mayor of Rayville, will represent local government.

Delhi secures funds to improve water system

Gov. John Bel Edwards has approved a $592,000 Louisiana Community Development Block Grant Public Facilities application for the Town of Delhi.  

This grant award is contingent upon the state’s receipt of LCDBG funds from HUD.  

We are ecstatic about this support for our community.

These state funds are critical in continuing to enhance our water projects which will impact positively the quality of life for our citizens. 

Runoff slated for police chief

Incumbent Police Chief Willie Robinson will face challenger Markus Turner in a run-off election on April 30.

Turner garnered 49 percent of the ballots with 364 votes while Robinson had 39 percent with 287 votes. Barbara Carroll received 93 votes for 13 percent.

The deadline to register to vote in person or by mail is March 30 while those using the Geaux Vote online system have until April 9 to register.

The deadline for requesting a mail ballot is April 26 and they must be returned by April 29.

Early voting will be April 16-23.
