Travis Wayne Richards

Memorial services for Travis Wayne “Cootsie” Richards, 84, of Delhi, will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2023, at Delhi Presbyterian Church in Delhi with Reverend Chris Wright and Reverend Paul Lipe, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home, Rayville.

Cootsie was born on December 8, 1938, in White Oak, Texas and died Monday, October 9, 2023, in Alexandria with his three children at his side.

He started his life in Texas until his parents moved to Delhi in 1951. He had the pleasure of growing up in Sun Camp with his parents, Quart and Louise Richards, and sisters, Patsy Ann Leidecker and Glynda Cobb.

After he graduated from Delhi High School in 1957, he worked for an oil construction company which took him to Jennings where he met his wife Vercy. They were married on September 28, 1963. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year with a trip to a casino in Vicksburg for fun and food, which their younger daughter Dana made possible.

Cootsie worked for Cotton Brothers Holsum from 1964-1996 and was known about town for many years as “the bread man.” His children could even be known to sneak in his truck to get a honey bun or two. Cootsie always said he had no sense of direction, and may get lost trying to get somewhere, but he knew his truck route.

He was also known around town for his jokes, pranks and shenanigans. This started at a young age and lasted till the very end. A good storyteller he was.

His family will cherish this humor along with the memories they made with him. Kim, his older daughter, was his and Vercy’s chauffeur to doctor appointments, with an added stop for lunch or supper. Always a Red Sox fan, Cootsie was also able to attend a game at Boston Fenway Park as a surprise from his son Troy.

Cootsie was a veteran with the United States Army and was a longtime member of the Delhi Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Quart and Louise Richards; and sister, Patsy Ann Leidecker.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Vercy Richards of Delhi; children, Kim Richards, Troy Richards and wife, Amy, and Dana Richards Hale and husband, David, all of Delhi; grandchildren, Langdon Travis Richards, Larkin Douglas Richards, Eliza Quinn Richards, Christopher Lawrence Hale and wife, Sydney, and Thomas Quinn Hale and wife, Brooke; great grandchildren, Vivian Rose Hale and Cecelia Ann Hale; sister Glynda Cobb and husband, Leland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Delhi Presbyterian Church, Delhi.
