Kathy Rushing

Kathy Rushing, a spirit of independence, intelligence, and strength, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and commitment.

Born in Oakland, California, Kathy was known for her sharp intellect, engaging conversations, and an overwhelmingly caring spirit. From the young age of 17, she took on the role of an educator, guide, and protector for her family, ensuring that the values she held close to her heart were passed down to the subsequent generations.

Kathy’s professional journey was marked by her long career as a bookkeeper. Those who had the privilege to work with her or learn from her were always inspired by her incredible work ethic, an attribute she proudly passed on to her children.

Kathy was blessed with a heart that knew no bounds when it came to her love for her family. She was a dedicated mother to her children and a proud grandmother, always ensuring that her family had what they needed, often sacrificing her own comfort in exchange for their security.

She now joins her late mother, Georgina Crowell of Daily City, California; her father, Sammy Aaron Free of Rayville, Louisiana; and her beloved brother, Jeffry Free of Oakland, California; in eternal rest.

Kathy’s spirit lives on through her husband, James Rushing; her children, Coreen Pettengell, Rachael Pennington, Megan Rushing, Tyler Rushing, and Layton Rushing, as well as their partners and spouses. Her memory is further cherished by her 12 grandchildren, who were her source of joy and pride.

To all who knew Kathy, she was not just a member of the family, but the heart that kept it beating. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her legacy of love, commitment, and dedication will continue to inspire and guide us.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for stories and memories to be shared, ensuring that the tales of Kathy’s compassion, strength, and love remain alive for generations to come.
