Death of acting mayor spurs alderman search

The Mangham Town Council is seeking a new acting interim mayor as well as at least one new interim alderman until the special election on Oct. 9.

“We will probably have a meeting later this week to appoint those positions,” Town Clerk Kristi Fleming said Monday.

The issue arose when acting interim mayor Zona McKay passed away April 29. McKay was filling the position left vacant when Mayor Johnnie Natt passed away Dec. 14, 2020.

The council was already one alderman short following the resignation of Perry Ellington. Ellington had stepped down due to scheduling issues.

This means if mayor pro-tem Anthony Killian steps into the position of interim mayor, the council will need to appoint two new interim aldermen to serve until the next municipal election this October. If Killian is unable to step in as Interim mayor until the election in October, the council will need to appoint a new interim mayor and a new interim alderman this week.

The next municipal election will be held Oct. 9. Qualifying for the election will be held July 14-16.
