Riverfield still undefeated

Much needed rain hit several areas of northeast Louisiana last Friday night.

One area that saw plenty of the wet stuff was Joe Meeks Field. The rain moved in about an hour before kick off time and continued throughout the game in an on again, off again fashion.

So, on a soggy, wet field, the Riverfield Raiders squared off against the St. Aloysius Flashes. The rain and wet field seemed to hinder the Raiders very little as they posted a 36-15 victory in the contest.

A pretty evenly matched first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie. The Raiders scored their eight points when Garrett Brakefield ran the ball in from two-yards out, completing a drive that had taken a little over four minutes off the clock. Nicholas Heath added a two-point conversion.

A couple of second quarter St. Al fumbles, one recovered by Braxton Shelton, and the other by Drew Garrett, gave the Raiders momentum to outs core the Flashes 20-7 in the quarter.

Second quarter scoring for the raiders started out as Hudson Brakefield broke loose on a 30-yard touchdown run in the opening seconds of the quarter. With 3:10 left in the quarter, the Raiders struck again as Braxton Shelton completed a 20-yard pass to Bailyn Sorenson for a touchdown.

Then with just 30 seconds left to play in the quarter, Shelton completed again, this time to Ty Skeldon for an 18-yard touchdown score. Nicholas Heath added a two-point conversion.

The Raiders went into halftime with a 28-15 advantage.

The scond half began with Riverfield kicking off to St. Al. Although St. Al kept possession of the ball for nearly two thirds of the quarter, they couldn’t capitalize and score. The only score of the third quarter belonged to the Raiders. It came when Garrett Brakefield broke loose on a 68-yard touchdown run. Nicholas Heath added a two-point conversion and with just 16 seconds left in the quarter, the Raiders advanced their lead to 36-15.

The fourth quarter, which seemed to move quickly by, was scoreless. When the final horn sounded, the Raiders had gained their fifth win of the season, defeating the Flashes 36-15.

Offensively, the Raiders gained 392 yards in the game. Of these, 325 were rushing yards and they scored three times with the rush. Leading the rushing was Nicholas Heath who had 155 yards on 18 carries. Garrett Brakefield added 111 yards on eight carries while Hudson Brakefield had 59 yards on five carries.

In the passing game, Braxton Shelton was five for seven for 67 yards. Shelton completed passes to Alex Allen, Bailyn Sorensen and Ty Skeldon, scoring twice with the pass.

The win put the Raiders at 5-0 for the season and sent them into week six preparing for a tough battle against Cathedral whom they will host tomorrow night.

Hey, Raider fans, come on out to Joe Meeks Field tomorrow night for some great Riverfield Raider football action.

Kick off is at 7 p.m.
