Riverfield plays barn burner against Tri County

The Riverfield Raiders took their second win of the season this past Friday night in a guts and glory battle if there ever was one.

The Raiders traveled to Flora, MS to do a battle with the Tri County Rebels a team that held the number 1 ranking in the MAIS 4A division. The Raiders came out on top by a score of 50-49. It was a classic second half fight in which the Raiders proved they could dig deep and not give up.

Tri County took the opening kick off in the game and had a 7-0 lead before two minutes had ticked off the clock. When the first quarter closed, they were leading 13-0.

The second quarter was hard fought and ended with both teams putting 14 points on the board. So the Raiders went into half time trailing 27-14.

The Raiders took the the opening kickoff of the second half. After a 7 yard return they then moved the ball 66 yards downfield in 4 plays and very quickly scored the first 8 points if the 3rd quarter, Tri County however, shut down any more would be Raider scores in the quarter, while they added 14 points to the board themselves. The third quarter ended with the Raiders still trailing by a score of 41-22 a 19 point deficient.

On behalf of the Raiders, I guess there is no other word to describe the 4th quarter but Awesome. The Raiders struck first in the fourth quarter with less than two minutes gone off the clock. A seven yard touch down run by Hudson Brakefield and a 2 point PAT gave the Raiders 8 points. Tri County then gained possession of the ball and was moving it downfield when the Raiders forced a fumble and Jackson Shelton recovered it for Riverfield.

Seven plays and 83 yards later the Raiders scored again one a 1 yard run by Garrett Brakefield. The PAT failed but with 6:30 left in the game, the Tri County lead had been cut to 41-36.

The next Tri County possession was 3 downs and a punt. The Raiders took over and moved the ball 41 yard in 5 plays to score their next 6 points. The touchdown was scored on a 15 yard passing play in which Braxton Shelton completed to Kaiden Geisbrec. The PAT failed but with just 3 minutes left in the game the Raiders went ahead for the first time all night 42-41. Tri County then scored again with 2:11 left on the clock to take back the lead 49-42.

The Raiders however were not gonna quit. In 1:11 they moved the ball 79 yards in 5 plays using both the run and the pass. Their final touch down of the night was on a 7 yard run by Garrett Brakefield. A 2 point PAT run by Hudson Brakefield was just enough to give the Raiders a one point lead 50-49 with 1 minutes left on the clock. The Raiders held Tri County for that one minute and celebrated their second victory of the season. Both of them being wins on the road.

The Raiders gained 584 yard of total offense in the game. 365 were gained with the run while 219 were gained in the air. Hudson Brakefield was the leading rusher in the game. Hudson gained 231 yards and scored four touchdowns. Garrett Brakefield gained 76 yards and scored two touchdowns. Nicholas Heath gained 48 yards before being sidelined with a shoulder injury in the second quarter. Colton Williams held 10 yards in the game.

In the passing game, Braxton Shelton was 13 for 18 gaining 190 yards including one touchdown completion to Kayden Geisbrect. Shelton also completed passed to Garrett Brakefield, Alex Allen, Ty Skeldon, and Hudson Brakefield. Garrett Brakefield was 3 for 5 gaining 29 yards. Brakfield completed to Alex Allen, Bailyn Sorencen, and Ty Skeldon.

The victory in Flora gives the Raiders a lot of momentum in playing their first home game of the season. It will be a Thursday night game. Thats right tonight the Riverfield Raiders will host the Riverfield Oaks Mustangs at 7:00 on Joe Meeks Field. Hey Raider fans come on out and support the Raiders tonight as the BEAT RIVER OAKS.
