American Legion, Girl Scouts team up to bring holiday cheer to local veterans

The Tommie Cook American Legion Post #122 joined forces with Girl Scout Troop #44 of Start to spread holiday cheer to veterans in Richland Parish nursing homes this December.

At the Legion’s monthly meeting, held Dec. 11 at the Rhymes Library, members prepared Christmas bags to be delivered by Dec. 15. Each of the twelve veterans – ten men and two women – received a jacket, slippers, hat, sugar-free candy and a drink cup, along with a Christmas card signed by Legion members.

The Girl Scouts added their own thoughtful touches, contributing throw blankets, calendars and toiletries. They also hand-painted wooden Christmas tree ornaments crafted by the Legion, creating keepsakes that blended the efforts of both groups.

Troop leader Kristy LaCroix and scouts Savannah Clarke, Synopa Sikes, Gracie Avants, Collyn LaCroix, Cheyenne Wood and Claudia Allen joined in the project, painting the ornaments and helping assemble the gift bags.

Legion member Susan Johnston noted refreshments were served during the meeting, making the gathering both productive and festive. Together, the American Legion and Girl Scouts ensured that local veterans were honored with gifts, gratitude, and holiday spirit.
