Delhi honors educator with street name
Taking part in the dedication of Herbert Nash Street were, from left, Delhi Alderman Larry Rancher, Nash’s son, Dr. Kenneth Nash, and Delhi Mayor Jesse Washington.

The Town of Delhi honored a beloved educator by naming a street after him last week.

Officials, family and friends of the late Herbert Nash gathered on Rundell Street Thursday afternoon to rename the street.

Nash was principal emeritus of the Richland Parish Training School, which later became the Esther Toombs High School in Delhi.

A native of Delhi, Mr. Nash was born July 10, 1914, the son of the Rev. David Nash and Hilton Howard Nash. After graduating from the Delhi Schools, he received his bachelor’s degree from Southern University and master’s from Texas Southern University in Houston. He received his 30-plus from Northeast Louisiana University.

In 1946 he became principal of the Richland Parish Training School, three and one-half miles south of Delhi. Under his leadership, the physical plant was relocated to Toombs Street in Delhi, and the modern building named Esther Toombs High School. He continued in the capacity of principal until 1971, when he was named attendance supervisor for the Richland Parish School System.

In his civic role, Mr. Nash served on the North Delta Regional Planning and Development Board, member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Board of directors for the Richland Council on Aging, and the Ouachita Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, the Louisiana Retired Teachers’ Association, and a member of the Mu Tau Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi.
