Start Junior High JAG excels at state conference
Attending JAG-LA State Conference were, from left, JAG-LA State Treasurer D’Antron McGarr, Hayden Odom, Braylee Sistrunk, Brylei Borden, Ryne McDuffie, Jace Pitre, Ryker Bryd, Addy Freeman and Lena Allen.

For the second year running, Start Junior High JAG Specialist, Nicole Lee, has earned the highest National Award given -- the High Performance Award.

While attending JAGLA State Conference in July at the Paragon Casino and Resort in Marksville, Lee was recognized for going above and beyond in her classroom, community service and community outreach. She and her students volunteered their time and resources and logged over 150 hours of service throughout the community. She was awarded Outstanding Specialist, 5 of 5, Community Service Leader and of course, the High Performance Award from National.

Last school year, Mason Bryant, competed and won the position as JAG-LA State Ambassador, where he represented SJH, his specialist, and the State of Louisiana with pride and integrity.

On Sept. 10, Start Junior High JAG students competed for the second time, to earn a position as a JAGLA state officer. All five competitors were ranked first or second in the first round of competition.

First round consists of writing a 200 word essay on how JAG has changed their life, and submit a twominute video as to why they should be chosen to represent JAG Louisiana as an officer. Each competitor advanced to the final round of selection, beating out 57 other middle schools throughout the state.

“I am so proud to be their specialist. They have worked diligently to get to this point in competition and each one deserves a chance to represent on a state level,” Lee said about her students competing.

After the final round, selections were made and Start Junior High is the home of our new JAG-LA State Treasurer. D’Antron McGarr swept the judges off their feet with his strong wit, his vulnerability, his willingness to serve, his unmatched smile and charm, not to mention is strong communication skills.

“I am elated to be teaching and mentoring another state officer,” Lee said. “The pride I feel is unmatched and I look forward to watching him make change in the JAG Program. Because like our moto this year—We are Unlimited—so is he.”
