The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has completed the drawdown and application of aerial herbicide to the Wham Brake Impoundment on Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area.
The drawdown was to control giant cutgrass (Zizaniopsis miliacea) and promote desirable moist soil vegetation.
The water control structures have been closed and boards installed to catch early teal season water, if available. Water levels are currently extremely low, therefore boaters should use extreme caution when navigating the brake.
Users are reminded that motorized vessels are prohibited 14 days prior to teal season and duck seasons on Wham Brake.
The boat ramp will be re-opened on Sept. 20 at 4 a.m. for early teal season.
Wham Brake was donated to LDWF in 2013 by International Paper. In 2017, with assistance from Ducks Unlimited, LDWF utilized funding from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, to construct a series of water control structures that allows LDWF to manage the impoundment for wintering waterfowl habitat.
