Rayville Police Chief Markus Turner states that as students return to school, our roads are experiencing a significant increase in traffic congestion, particularly during morning and afternoon commute times.
“The start of the school year brings with it a host of new challenges for drivers, pedestrians, and students alike, as school buses, parents dropping off children, and new teen drivers all contribute to a more crowded and complex road environment,” he said.
Chief Turner said some key safety points to keep in mind include:
• School Zone Speed Limits: Drivers must slow down and obey posted speed limits in school zones. These reduced speeds are in place to protect children who may be walking or biking to school.
• School Bus Safety: It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Drivers must stop for a school bus under these conditions, regardless of their direction of travel, unless on a divided highway with a raised barrier.
• Eliminate Distractions: The use of handheld devices is prohibited, especially in active school zones. Drivers should put away their phones and focus entirely on the road, as children can be unpredictable and may dart into the street unexpectedly.
• Plan Ahead: Expect heavier traffic during school hours. Planning your route in advance and allowing extra time for potential delays can reduce stress and the temptation to drive recklessly.
“By working together, we hope to ensure a safe and smooth start to the new academic year for everyone,” Chief Turner said.
