Ceremony at Naval Station Mayport draws friends, family, and shipmates

In a heartfelt ceremony filled with emotion, laughter, and reflection, Senior Navy Leader Tyrone Jiles was officially honored for his 30 years of service to the United States Navy.

Held on June 27 at the Naval Station Mayport Gym in Jacksonville, Fla., the retirement ceremony drew a crowd of shipmates from every corner of his career, as well as lifelong friends, classmates, and family—some of whom had not seen him in decades.

The gym was filled with applause, pride, and admiration as speakers detailed Jiles’ remarkable journey from small-town Louisiana to decorated Navy veteran, mentor, and leader. It was a moment of full-circle reflection for a man whose roots shaped his resilience, integrity, and drive.

During his speech, Jiles expressed sincere gratitude for those who came to share in the milestone.

“Seeing my shipmates, classmates, and family all under one roof was something I never thought I’d experience. It was overwhelming in the best way,” he said. “This ceremony wasn’t just about me — it was about the village that raised me, the crew that served beside me, and the legacy we built together.”

In a deeply personal moment, Tyrone paid tribute to his hometowns of Rayville and Delhi where his story first began.

“To my hometown—you may be small on the map, but you are big in my heart,” Jiles said. “I’ve carried the lessons, values, and pride of Rayville and Delhi with me across every ocean and into every command. I wanted to make sure that when people looked at me, they saw the strength, spirit, and soul of the places I come from. I hope I made y’all proud.”

As his voice filled with emotion, many in the crowd nodded in agreement, he was visibly moved by his words. Jiles has long been known not only for his operational excellence but also for his mentorship, particularly with young sailors— many of whom credit him with inspiring their careers.

While the Navy chapter closes, Tyrone’s next steps remain community-focused. He plans to continue mentoring youth through public speaking programs, leadership development, and nonprofit work—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds like his own.

“I may be retiring from the uniform, but I’m not done serving. I want to show young people from places like Rayville and Delhi that their dreams can stretch farther than they ever imagined.”

Following the ceremony, Jiles was celebrated at a retirement party at the Grand Rose Ballroom and a weekend full of festivities, including a community barbecue and farewell brunch.

Tyrone Jiles leaves behind a legacy of honor, service, and representation— proof that no matter where you come from, greatness is within reach.
