Soybeans reaching maturity

Soybeans are the second most widely planted row crop in Richland Parish.

They are rapidly approaching maturity with most fields currently in the R4 to R5 growth stages. Research has shown timing a fungicide application at the R4 growth stage gives the best results when diseases are present. The R4 growth stage is also the last stage to apply dry or granular fertilizer since the plant nutrient uptake will increase during the R5 and R6 growth stages resulting in significant dry matter accumulation.

As soybeans approach maturity, timely management decisions become critical to ensure yield and quality. Knowing when to apply defoliants and insecticides can impact the profitability of the crop. The use of a defoliant or desiccant can aid in the drying down of the crop for harvest.

The decision to apply a defoliant or desiccant occurs as the crop reaches the R7 growth stage.

Redbanded stink bug damage can impact the quality of the soybean seed in late season. Their populations can increase quickly. Scouting for economic thresholds and making timely insecticide applications can help reduce their damage.

With harvest season just around the corner, Richland Parish producers are keeping a close eye on both crop development and pest pressure to have a good soybean crop.
