The Town of Delhi has begun construction on a major drainage improvement project in the downtown area, under permit from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
The project, contracted to Benchmark Construction, will enhance drainage infrastructure along Georgia Street, Oak Street, Depot Street, and Cedar Street. Improvements include the installation of new catch basins and the upsizing of existing drainage pipes to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
“This project is a significant step toward improving stormwater management in our downtown district,” Delhi Mayor Jesse Washington said.
The total contract amount is $1,312,572, funded jointly by the United States Department of Agriculture – Rural Development and the Town of Delhi.
Construction is already underway. Due to safety concerns during the installation of underground drainage structures, Louisiana Highway 17 is fully closed from Depot Street to the intersection with Highway 80.
The closure began June 4 and is expected to remain in place through June 18, weather permitting.
Motorists are advised to follow posted detour routes and exercise caution in the area.
