Archaeologists under the direction of Professor T.R. Kidder from Washington University in St. Louis are conducting excavations at Poverty Point World Heritage Site until June 13.
While the hard work of re-excavating is nearing completion, the team will begin to clean up the profiles (excavated walls) of the excavations. This will allow the use of modern technology not available to archaeologists decades ago.
The project seeks to get a more precise view of when and how quickly the native peoples constructed some parts of the earthworks built over 3,000 years ago.
The archaeologists also suspect they may find evidence of sophisticated engineering, specifically purposeful mixing of sediments to maximize erosion resistance.
While final results for the project may not come for some time, you can take a look into the ancient past with the team until June 13.
