State and local election officials gathered at the Richland Parish Registrar of Voters Office Wednesday morning to certify and seal early voting machines ahead of the May 16 election.

Taking part in the process were local representatives Laura Sledge and Sam Hesser, representing the Democratic and Republican parties, along with Richland Parish Registrar of Voters Carol Morgan and Clerk of Court Melissa Morris.

“This is about making sure everything is accurate, secure and ready before early voting begins,” Morgan said. “We want the public to have confidence that the machines are properly tested and protected every step of the way.”

The certification process is conducted prior to early voting to ensure all machines are properly prepared and secured. During the procedure, officials verify that each machine is functioning correctly, confirm that no votes are stored on the devices and ensure ballot styles are properly loaded.

Once testing is complete, the machines are sealed with numbered security tags. Those seals are documented and remain in place until the machines are opened for early voting, providing a chain of custody and helping ensure the integrity of the election process.

Officials said the procedure is a routine but essential step in preparing for early voting, which is scheduled for May 2-9 at the Richland Parish Registrar of Voters Office in the basement of the Richland Parish Courthouse.

Voting will not be held Sunday, May 3. The north side of the courthouse will serve as the entrance for early voting.

Polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during the early voting period.

Voters are required to bring identification. Acceptable forms include a Louisiana driver’s license, Louisiana special ID card, a generally recognized picture identification card with name and signature such as a passport, or a digital license through LA Wallet.

Eligible voters may also request a mail ballot. Forms are available through the Registrar of Voters Office or online at the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website.
