LDH shares tips for dealing with spring weather

The Louisiana Department of Health issued a seasonal reminder this week about several spring‑related hazards that tend to increase with rainfall — even as much of the state, including northeast Louisiana, continues to experience drought conditions.

LDH noted that spring rain can lead to higher mosquito activity, wet and hazardous roadways, and an increased risk of power outages.

While the region has seen little rainfall so far, officials emphasized that preparation now can help protect health and safety once wetter weather returns.

The department emphasized several key safety concerns associated with spring weather: Even small amounts of standing water can quickly become breeding sites. LDH encourages residents to empty containers that collect water, clean gutters and drains, and use insect repellent when outdoors.

Rain can create slick roadways and reduce visibility. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, avoid flooded areas, and use headlights during rain or low‑light conditions.

Storms and flooding can lead to unexpected outages. LDH recommends using generators only outdoors and away from windows, relying on flashlights instead of candles, and practicing safe food handling once power is restored.
