Lady Dragons split pair, rout Claiborne Christian

Mangham High School split its two softball games last week, opening with an offensive eruption against Claiborne Christian before running into a tough Oak Grove squad.

The Lady Dragons rolled to an 11-4 win over Claiborne Christian on March 31, then were shut out 10-0 by Oak Grove on April 2.

Mangham’s offense was on full display in the March 31 victory, as the Lady Dragons collected 15 hits and scored in five different innings, including a three-run second and a four-run seventh.

Kennedy McMurray led the way offensively, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Micaela Turner delivered a huge performance, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Shelbie Pruitt added a strong game at the plate, going 1-for-5 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs, while Marra Beth Hutson went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Abbigail Hardie contributed a 1-for-3 effort with a home run, an RBI, a run scored and two walks. Ella Dickens went 2-for-4 with a home run and a run scored, and Madelyn Wiggins added a 2-for-4 performance with a home run and a run scored.

Ellie Barton chipped in with a 1-for-3 outing with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ava Glass added a hit as Mangham got production throughout the lineup.

In the circle, Marra Beth Hutson earned the win with a completegame effort, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out three.

Mangham could not find the same offensive rhythm in the April 2 matchup against Oak Grove, as the Lady Dragons were limited to three hits in a 10-0 loss.

Abbigail Hardie, Kennedy McMurray and Marra Beth Hutson each recorded a hit for Mangham. Hardie, McMurray and Hutson each also hit doubles in the contest.

The Lady Dragons were held scoreless through five innings while Oak Grove steadily built its lead, scoring in all five innings and finishing with 11 hits.

Abbigail Hardie took the loss in the circle, working three innings and allowing nine hits and 10 runs, though only three were earned.

Marra Beth Hutson pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits while holding Oak Grove scoreless the rest of the way.

Mangham also had defensive miscues in both games. Ella Dickens and Kennedy McMurray were charged with errors in the Claiborne Christian game, while Madelyn Wiggins, Ava Glass, Kennedy McMurray and Saddie Thomas were each charged with errors against Oak Grove.

Even with the split, Mangham showed its offensive potential in the win over Claiborne Christian and got another strong week of production from several key bats in the lineup.
