The Rayville Fire Department will be conducting fire hydrant inspections and maintenance throughout the town over the next two weeks, a process officials say is necessary to ensure the system functions properly during emergencies.
Captain Billy Cardin said the routine work may temporarily cause water discoloration for some homes and businesses as crews carry out the inspections.
“We will be continuing to perform necessary inspections and maintenance to fire hydrants in town over the next two weeks,” Cardin said. “Unfortunately this may cause a discoloration of the water to some homes and businesses. We apologize for this inconvenience. These tasks are crucial for public safety to ensure we have adequate water supply in the event of an emergency.”
According to the department, hydrant inspections are an important part of maintaining the community’s fire protection system.
The checks allow firefighters to verify that water pressure and flow rates are sufficient for firefighting operations.
During the inspections, crews also look for leaks, corrosion, damage or other issues that could affect a hydrant’s performance. Ensuring hydrants are clearly visible and easily accessible for firefighters is another key part of the process.
Officials say the maintenance helps identify potential problems early, preventing more serious issues that could lead to costly repairs or replacements later.
Regular hydrant inspections also help ensure the system meets local safety standards and regulations.
Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Moore said the work helps guarantee hydrants will operate reliably when they are needed most, including during fires or other emergencies.
