Visitors are invited to experience Poverty Point World Heritage Site after dark during a special guided Night Hike scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28.
The hike will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will cover approximately two miles through the ancient earthworks and surrounding landscape. Rangers will lead participants along the trail, highlighting the natural environment and cultural history of the Indigenous people who lived at the site more than 3,000 years ago.
Along the way, participants will learn about nocturnal wildlife and the significance of the mounds and earthworks that make Poverty Point a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The evening will conclude with a small bonfire and storytelling, featuring traditional tales drawn from Native tribes of the Eastern Woodlands region.
Participation in the Night Hike is limited to 50 people, and advance registration is required. Those interested may register by calling 318-926-5492 or emailing povertypointwhs_mgr@crt. la.gov.
Visitors are encouraged to bring flashlights for activities such as spider sniffing and to wear appropriate hiking clothing and footwear. Trail conditions may be muddy.
