Richland Parish Police Jury member Steve Adcock said an ongoing problem with illegally dumped tires has led to a coordinated cleanup effort involving Meta and multiple state and local agencies.
Adcock said 18-wheelers have been dumping used tires on private property throughout the parish, creating a burden for landowners who did not cause the problem.
“We’ve had a problem with 18-wheelers dumping tires on private property,” Adcock said. “We couldn’t prove it was Meta and they couldn’t prove it wasn’t.”
Adcock said he personally has been affected.
“I’ve had 14 dumped on my private property,” he said.
According to Adcock, other landowners across Richland Parish have also complained about tires being left on their land.
“It shouldn’t be up to the people of Richland Parish to clean up a mess other people are making,” he said.
Adcock said he met with representatives from Meta to discuss the issue, and the company agreed to help address the problem. As part of the plan, three tire collection points will be established, with Meta handling disposal of the tires.
Collection points will be located on McGown Road, O.M. Walker Road and at the intersection of Fortenberry Road and Jaggers Lane.
Adcock said the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office have also assisted in addressing the situation.
Adcock said he and Meta hope the tire dumping issue will be resolved by the end of next month.
