The Rayville Junior High School Library Club visited the North Louisiana Military Museum in Ruston on Jan. 16 to learn more about military history and survival during wartime.
The field trip was designed to support classroom reading and research tied to the novel Behind Rebel Lines by Seymour Reit, which students are currently studying. The book tells the story of Emma Edmonds, who served as a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War.
“The students wanted to learn more about the military during that time period and the type of warfare that was involved,” reading and library teacher Torrie Britton said.
During the visit, students toured the museum’s two floors of exhibits. The first floor features displays highlighting Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from three branches of the military. The second floor includes uniforms from all branches of service, as well as items representing the American Red Cross and military insignia.
Students also explored the outdoor exhibits, which include helicopters, tanks, artillery, anti-aircraft guns and a Civil Warera cannon. Throughout the tour, students learned about the roles and history of all branches of the U.S. military.
