After a weekend that started with a show of American strength and unity with B-52 flybys, Saturday ended with the largest display of disunity so far against the quarantine as nearly 300 shouted at Louisiana’s Executive Mansion for Governor John Bel Edwards to reopen business immediately.
Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced he will extend Louisiana’s Stay at Home order until May 15 to continue to slow the spread of COVID-19. Louisiana does not currently meet the White House criteria for entering Phase One of reopening.
Unemployment rose sharply in Richland Parish in March according to figures release this week by the Louisiana Works commission.
The jobless rate for Richland Parish rose from 6.5 percent in in February to 8.6 percent in March. It is also up from 5.7 percent in March 2019.
That translates into 722 people being out of work in Richland Parish last month as opposed to 528 in February and 470 a year ago.
The Richland Parish workforce was up to 7,676 people in March, up from 7,605 people in February and down from 7,747 a year ago.
In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced antibodies-testing of shoppers at 3,000 supermarkets revealed 13.9 percent of New Yorkers had been infected with COVID-19 but in New York City, that number shot to 21 percent. That would mean one in five people in the nation's largest city either has or has had the virus.
