Start robbery suspect caught while fishing

The man accused of the February armed robbery of the Start In-N-Out Mart has been arrested.

Within an hour of the robbery which took placed Feb. 23, the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office was able to use security camera footage to identify the suspect as Derrick Terrell Banks, 46, and issued a warrant for his arrest.

RPSO investigators the determined Banks was not in Richland or any of the surrounding parishes. Aided by the Louisiana State Police Criminal Intelligence Unit-Monroe, deputies began conducting interviews throughout northeast Louisiana and Texas.

Jump Start expansion benefits Richland

The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted last week to expand the Jump Start Summers program, affording more than 3,000 high school students the opportunity to earn academic credit, engage in workplace-based learning, and attain critical industry-based credentials, all while earning a wage, during the upcoming summer months. 

Farmer helps Care and Share

Richland Parish farmer Cliff Mills directed $2,500 to Care and Share Ministries  through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Bayer Fund. 

As part of their mission, the organization will use the funds to provide a food pantry for the community.

DCS student takes first in History Day event

Kolton Kelley, a sophomore from Delhi Charter School, placed first in the individual exhibit category at the April 6 Louisiana State History Day Competition hosted at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans and will advance to the National Competition held June 9-13 on the campus of the University of Maryland near Washington, DC. Kelley advanced to the state competition after placing first at the Monroe Regional Competition hosted at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum on March 16. 

Rayville man pleads guilty to mail fraud

United States Attorney David C. Joseph announced that Ronald W. Reeves, 68, of Rayville, pleaded guilty Friday before U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty to two counts of mail fraud for his role in a scheme to steal nearly $400,000.

According to the guilty plea, Reeves conspired with others from April 2014 to April 2017 to fraudulently divert mail from the intended recipients to himself in order to obtain checks, credit cards and identifying information of the victims.
