Brightening up Barksdale

A mural created by U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ashley Johnson, a munitions technician assigned to the 707th maintenance squadron, decorates the walls of the 307th Maintenance Squadron munitions flight building at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. Since becoming a Reserve Citizen Airman, Johnson has created several different designs for units around the 307th Bomb Wing.

Richland woman explores art in Air Force

For some, the dream of utilizing a professional career to pursue a personal passion is just that…a dream.  But Staff Sgt. Ashley Johnson, has turned that ideal into her every-day reality.

Johnson, the daughter of Carolyn Johnson of Shreveport and the granddaughter of Frances Frey of Rayville, is a mechanical ordinance technician with the 707 Maintenance Squadron. She has leveraged her career as a Reserve Citizen Airman to further her goals as an artist.  In fact, she has been able to combine her passion for art and her service to country on several different occasions.

Annual MLK parade, banquet slated Jan. 21

The Martin Luther King Memorial Society will have its annual Dr. King holiday activities Jan. 21.

This year’s banquet will be held  free of charge  at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Rayville Civic Center. The guest speaker is Pastor Vance A. Price of New Saint James Baptist Church of Monroe. This year’s theme is “Let’s Finish the Dream.” All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Delhi marks Black history

The Black History Committee for the Town of Delhi is pleased to announce the theme for the 2019 celebration will be A Time to Learn and Remember.

The committee will be honoring some of the area educators for their commitment to leading and teaching. 

The Mr. and Miss Black History Pageant is scheduled at 5 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Delhi Civic Center. Applications can be obtained at Town Hall. 

No wake zones in place

Richland Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Dawn Williams announced that effective Jan. 7 the Boeuf River and Woolen Lake are under an Emergency No Wake Zone.  

“Due to backwater and watercraft traffic pushing water into homes and camps we felt this action is necessary,” Williams said.  “We are attempting to protect homes and the public’s safety.” 

This no wake zone will be strictly enforced by Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Crops forum planned Feb. 7 in Delhi

 LSU AgCenter experts will present the latest research updates in corn, cotton and soybean production at the annual Northeast Louisiana Crops Forum set for Feb. 7 at the Delhi Convention Center.

Forum topics will include insect and weed resistance management, cover crops and cover crop termination recommendations, wildlife damage management, 2018 Farm Bill highlights and commodity outlook updates.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks at 9. A sponsored lunch will be served at noon. The Delhi Convention Center is located at 108 Denver St.
