Monroe man pleads guilty in shooting of Rayville resident

District Attorney John M. “Mack” Lancaster announced that on Aug. 16, Joshua J. Chisley of Monroe pled guilty to manslaughter and aggravated burglary in connection with the death of Keric Whitfield on May 12, 2017. 

Lancaster said that Chisley will be sentenced on Nov. 7 by Judge Stephen Dean.  Chisley may receive a sentence of up to 70 years in prison.  Lancaster advised that Chisley is currently 25 years old.

Richland agencies partner with Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers of North Delta is expanding into Richland Parish.

Richland Parish Sheriff Gary Gilley said getting a crime stoppers program for Richland Parish had been one of his long-term goals. Gilley, along with Delhi Police Chief Roy Williams, Mangham Police Chief Perry Fleming and Rayville Police Chief Willie Robinson met with officials from the Crime Stoppers organization to begin the process.

Plans are also underway to expand the program into Jackson, Caldwell and Morehouse parishes.

RHS starts year helping students fight diabetes

Students at Rayville High School have the opportunity to participate in the Adolescent Pre-Diabetes Prevention Program during the 2018-2019 school year.

During the 2017-18 school year, RHS received $500 for participating In the program. The program is a grant to Richland Parish Hospital from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Richland Parish Hospital partners with West Felciana Parish Hospital and Christus Health Central Louisiana to provide personnel and programming help. 

Local riders win at regionals

Two Richland Parish 4-H members brought home awards from a recent regional horse show.

They were among 4-H’ers from 13 states who participated in the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show, held Aug. 1 to 5 in Perry, Ga.

Dora Dawson finished in second place, ranch breakaway roping; fifth place, ranch trail; eighth place, ranch working cow horse; and eighth place, ranch riding and Abby Claire Hillman took ninth place, pole bending.

Scouting night set

The Louisiana Purchase Council, Boy Scouts of America will host a Join Scouting School Night kickoff at 6 p.m. Aug. 30  at Delhi United Methodist Church.

Parents or guardians and their sons and daughters are encouraged to attend the kickoffs to learn about all that Cub Scouts has to offer. Boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade are eligible to participate in Cub Scouts. Boys must be 11 years old or in the sixth grade to join.
