Crops forum planned Feb. 7 in Delhi

 LSU AgCenter experts will present the latest research updates in corn, cotton and soybean production at the annual Northeast Louisiana Crops Forum set for Feb. 7 at the Delhi Convention Center.

Forum topics will include insect and weed resistance management, cover crops and cover crop termination recommendations, wildlife damage management, 2018 Farm Bill highlights and commodity outlook updates.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks at 9. A sponsored lunch will be served at noon. The Delhi Convention Center is located at 108 Denver St.

State impressed with Richland lead teachers pilot program

Richland Parish is one of eight rural school systems highlighted in a report released today by the Louisiana Department of Education highlights pilot programs in eight rural school systems that allow these new teachers to “co-teach” with a veteran teacher for at least one class period per day. 

The  Richland Parish school system created seven “Lead Coach” positions and arranged for these expert teachers to spend two to three hours per day with their alternate certification mentees. During this time, they co-teach, observe, provide feedback, and collaboratively plan.

Delhi Christmas celebration set

The Town of Delhi’s Christmas celebration events will be held Dec. 15, beginning with a Downtown Street Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., located on Depot Street.

This year’s theme is Christmas Carols.  The parade is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The route will proceed north on Broadway Street and turn West on Hwy 80. Line up for the parade is at 3 p.m. To avoid congestion on Sun Road, the committee is asking all floats and cars to line up by way of Kentucky Street to Sun Road.  ATV will lineup at the field where the Delhi sign is located and riding clubs at the farmer’s market. 

Delhi mayor, police chief earn re-election

The Town of Delhi voted to keep its current mayor and police chief during Saturday’s runoff election.

Mayor Jesse Washington was returned to office with 64 percent of the vote with 694 votes to Lynn Lewis’ 388.

Nathaniel “Roy” Williams kept his position as police chief by a margin of 71 percent with 767 votes to Micah Duchesne’s 308.

Larry Houston was elected alderman in Delhi District B by a 51 percent margin with 115 votes to Bob Benson’s 110.

Richland Parish congressman to run for governor of Louisiana

Ralph Abraham, M.D., today announced that he will run for Governor of Louisiana.

“I’m running for Governor, and I intend to win,” he said.

Abraham will have a formal campaign launch after the first of the year.

Abraham is a conservative Republican and has served in Congress since 2015 as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District. It is the largest district in terms of area in the state and includes 24 parishes in North, Central and Southeast Louisiana.
