Scrapping cotton for quilts remembered

Life was extremely hard for sharecroppers living on plantations in the South. 

Women toiled in the cotton fields with their husbands and children, then took care of their families. At night, after a long day of work, the women quilted. It was their responsibility to provide covers to keep the family warm in homes that were poorly insulated.

Sheriff’s office seeking suspect in robbery

The Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office is seeking information leading to the arrest of Derrick Terrell Banks, 46, in connection with an armed robbery in Start.

The robbery took place at 9:43 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Start In-N-Out Mart, located at 2902 Magnolia Drive.  

The Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office identified Banks after reviewing security camera footage.  The footage shows a man who appears to be Banks entering the Start In-N-Out at closing time and holding store attendants at gunpoint before making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Drugs seized in traffic stop

The Mangham Police Department seized 20 grams of methamphetamines after Officer Marshall Waters stopped James Dylan Barrett for speeding 58 in a 45 at 11 p.m. Feb. 16. During the stop Waters noticed Barrett appeared to be nervous and obtained consent to search the vehicle. Waters then discovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamines in the vehicle. Barrett was charged with possession of methamphetamines with intent, speeding 58 in a 45 and driving under suspension and transported to Richland Parish Detention Center.

Delhi man gets 12 years for arson

Kenneth Fulford of Antley Road, Delhi, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for an April 16, 2018 arson at 351 Antley Road, Delhi, District Attorney John M. “Mack” Lancaster announced.

  Fulford was also sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated cruelty to an  animal arising out of the same incident.

Hunt for suspect ends in arrest

A Rayville man was arrested for burglary this week.

Rayville Police Chief Willie Robinson  said his department was advised of a  commercial  burglary at 506 Harrison St., at approximately 11:45 a.m. Feb. 20. Lt. Czyz Williams and

Investigator Jerry Davis were called to the location where they discovered a hole in the ceiling where the suspect entered the building and stole several cartons of cigarettes, cigars and assorted types of liquor.
