Local students initiated into ULM honor society

Karley Burgess of Mangham and Tristan Oswald of Rayville were recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. 

Police Report

The Rayville Police Department made the following arrests for the week of April 15-22.

• Coboria Colllins, 37, 504 Spruce St., Rayville; driving under suspension, running a stop sign, failure to appear for driving under suspension, failure to appear for no insurance and failure to appear for careless operation with an accident.

• Ladeziman Briggs, 19, 1401 Erin St., Monroe; no driver’s license, speeding and resisting by flight.

State champs honored

The Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce hosted a community event April 11 in the gymnasium at Delhi High School to celebrate the Delhi Girls Basketball State Championship and help raise money for their championship rings. The Delhi Bears raised nearly $1,900 during the event.

The Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce hosted a community event April 11 in the gymnasium at Delhi High School to celebrate the Delhi Girls Basketball State Championship and help raise money for their championship rings. 

“The support from the community and town leaders in Delhi was overwhelming. We thought we would pass flyers out to help spread the word about the event. Everyone we spoke to already had plans to attend. Mayor Washington said he had already been the bank and was ready to donate,” says Richland Chamber Board Member Chelsea Higginbotham. 

Longino signs with Lakeland

Delhi Charter School’s Desmond Longino, front right, has signed to play basketball at Lakeland University in Plymouth, Wisc. He was accompanied by his mother, Tanisha Longino, and his coach Chad Clark at the signing. He is also the grandson of Marie Longino and Frederick Mingo.

Delhi Charter School’s Desmond Longino signed to play basketball at Lakeland University in Plymouth, Wisc.

Longino has played every position at DCS since he began playing varsity as a seventh grader. 

He will end his career at DCS as the all time leader in games played, points scored, playoff wins and a host of other records. He was on the first team to win a playoff game. Longino has been a big part of changing the way DCS basketball is viewed in the area and will be missed tremendously.
