Police Report

The Rayville Police Department made the following arrests for the week of Sept. 2-9.

• Jennifer Smiley, 36; 401 McCaa St., Rayville; failure to appear on aggravated assault and failure to appear on simple criminal damage to property.

• Cody Stansbury, 18; 3509 Magnolia St., Rayville; disturbing the peace by loud music.

• Albert O’Neal, 37; 315 Blackmon St., Rayville; damage to property (warrant), simple criminal trespass, driving under suspension, switched license plates and resisting arrest.

Riverfield Raiders post second win of the season

The Riverfield Academy Raiders posted their second win of the season this past Friday night as they defeated the Hillcrest Cougars by a score of 41-0.

The win gives the Raiders a 2-0 district standing and brings them to 2-2 overall. 

From the onset of the contest, it became pretty obvious that the Raiders were the strongest of the two teams. Offensively, the Raiders scored two first quarter touchdowns and four in the second quarter. Defensively, the Raiders shut down all scoring attempts by the Cougars. The Raiders went into half time with a very solid lead of 39-0.

Newsom retires from teaching music at Howard

John E. Newson Sr., is retiring as director of university Bands at Howard University after 50 years in music education.

A Rayville native, Newsom is a graduate of the Class of 1965, Eula D Britton. and the son of Roosevelt and Zipporah Newson.

Prior to his elevation to this position, he served as associate director of University Bands from 1986 to 1992. He has held the conductorship of the concert, marching and pep bands. 

His career and retirement will be celebrated from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 28 during Howard homecoming weekend.

Retired teachers plan meeting in Mangham

District IX of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association will host its fall meeting Sept. 12 at the Mangham Community Center.

The meeting will be hosted by the Richland Parish Retired Teachers Association will be the guest speaker. He will give important updates about the legislative sessions and other important news concerning the LRTA.

All LRTA members are urged to attend, as well as new retirees. Each member is asked to bring a gift for exchanging. All businesses (banks, stores, law firms, law enforcement agencies, etc.) are asked to donate gifts for door prizes.
