Raiders open football season at Jam in the Grove
Summer break has zipped by and students have returned to school this week.
That means its time for another great season of Riverfield Raider football. The Raiders took the field this past Saturday as they participated in the Jam at the Grove, a season-opening jamboree at ULM featuring several area MAIS teams.
In the first of two 20-minute contests, the Raiders face off against Union Christian Academy. The Raider offense moved the ball well, gaining 105 yards in the game. They scored on their first possession when quarterback Braxton Shelton connected with Ty Skeldon on a 20-yard passing play. Hudson Brakefield added two on the PAT to give the Raiders an 8-0 lead.
In the rushing game, Nicholas Heath led the way, turning out 44 yards on five carries. Garrett Brakefield had 24 yards on three arries. Peyton Rayborn carried once for 10 yards and Hayden Adams added four yards on two carries.
The Raiders held on to their 8-0 lead until the end of the first game, giving them the win over Union Christian.
The Raiders matched up against Clinton Christian Academy in their second game of the afternoon.
The game ended in an 8-8 tie.
The Raiders gained their eight points on a 16-yard run by Hudson Brakefield. Garrett Brakefield added two on the PAT. Braxton Shelton went one for three in passing, completing once to Ty Skeldon for 30 yards.
This year’s Riverfield Raider team consists of six seniors, 13 juniors, five sophomores, seven freshmen and four eighth graders.
Raider coaches are Head Coach Boyd Cole, Kyle Stracener, Trey McLeland, Marc Simmons, Lucas Crockett, Ronnie Lowery and Zach Kenly.
The Raiders will travel to Cleveland, Miss., tomorrow night to face the Bayou Academy Colds in the first game of he regular season.
