Hornets close regular season with victories

This disrupted-district (Vidalia and Ferriday didn’t play due to COVID protocols) has come to an end.

The girls had their last two games canceled but the Hornet boys continued to deal misery to their opponents. The last teams to swallow this bitter pill were General Trass and Mangham.

I was unable to attend these games myself.  It’s just as well.  I’m all out of superlatives for this team. Hornets 110, General Trass, who tried to tackle this buzz saw with only seven players, 20.  I feel sure the “mercy” clock must have been running.

Rayville got 44 points in the first quarter. This is more than a lot of teams can score against the Hornets in a whole game. GT is a case in point. I don’t think I could have kept up. I’m sure it would have made me dizzy.

Here is the unofficial results of the scoring: Tony Percy 22, Kashie Natt 18, Cameron Smith and DeMarqus Dixon with 13 each, Zalon Hedgeman 10, Dameron Williams and Devon Ellis 8 each, Jalon Qualls 7, Zyquarous Cowart and LaBrandon Butler 4 and Tyler Bess added 3.

Mangham (ranked #20) played the Hornets a little tougher 88-55. As I say, any team that can stay within 33 points of the Hornets is a pretty good team.

Scoring for the Hornets were: Cowart 22, Natt 16, Dixon 14, Williams and Qualls 8 each, Smith 6, Percy and Ellis 4 each and Thompson added 2.

For Mangham D. Williams and J. Smith led the way with 12 each, S. Haynes 11, J. Williams and C. Young had 4 and two numbers whose names didn’t make it to my scorebook #’s 12 and 11 scored 10 and 2 respectively.

Right now they are trying to get practice with Wossman in a Hall of Fame Game in Monroe on Saturday.  Should be a dandy.  #1 3A Wossman and #1 2A Rayville have split two games this season.

Call RHS at 728-3296 to see if the game materializes. It would truly be a Hall of Fame game.

Meanwhile the girls (now #8) are starting their march toward the championship. They host #25 Northeast on Feb. 19. They should win this one and if they do they will play at home again against #9 Many.  This might be a game.  Win this one and they play #1 Doyle at Doyle. Beat them and it’s on to Southeastern Coliseum in Hammond for the semi-final.

Could it be that we will have a double championship this season?
