Qualifying ends for April presidential primaries

Qualifying has ended for the April 4 presidential primaries.

Candidates qualifying to seek the Democratic presidential nomination are Michael Bennet,  Lakewood, CO; Michael R. Bloomberg, New York, NY; Cory Booker of Newark, NJ; Pete Buttigieg, South Bend, IN; John K. Delaney, Bethesda, MD; Tulsi Gabbard,  Kapolei, HI; Amy Klobuchar, Minneapolis, MN; Deval Patrick, Boston, MA; Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, Burlington, VT; Tom Steyer of San Francisco, CA; Elizabeth Warren, Boston; Robby Wells of Waynesboro, GA; and Andrew Yang, New York, NY.

November jobless rate up half a percent

The unemployment rate for Richland Parish rose half a percent in November 2019, according to figures released this week by the Louisiana Works Commission.

The jobless rate for Richland Parish rose to 6.5 percent in November from 6 percent in October 2019. It was 5.3 percent in November 2018.

This translates into 533 people looking for work in Richland Parish in November 2019, up from 499 in October and 435 in November 2018.

Richland Parish’s workforce was 7,677 in November 2019, down from 7,753 in October and 7,764 in November 2018.

Qualifying underway for party primaries

Qualifying for the April 4 presidential primary election will be held from Jan. 8-10.

Candidates may qualify to run in the Democratic, Republican or independent party primaries.

Registered Democrats may qualify for the Democratic State Central Committee 19th representative office A and B and for the office of Democratic Parish Executive Committee member in Districts 1-9 and for five at-large positions.

Deadline nears for junior horse show

The 2020 Northeast Louisiana Junior Livestock Horse Show will be held Jan. 25 in Delhi.

Participants are expected to check in between 8-8:30 a.m. Jan. 25 and the show will begin at 9 a.m. The Young Riders Club will have a trick performance at lunch.

Pre-registration is $10 per class by Jan. 17 and $15 per class afterwards.

Entry form, registration, Coggins and check/money order must be mailed to: Richland Parish Extension Office, NE LA Jr. Livestock Horse Show, Post Office Box 179, Rayville, LA  71269 before Jan. 18 to get early bird fees.
