JV Lady Raiders improving

After a slow start to their season, dropping the first two games, the Riverfield JV girls basketball team has certainly put it all together lately.

Rebounding from the 0-2 start, the junior varsity Lady Raiders have won 13 of 14 games since for a season slate of 13-3 and a district-leading record of 7-0.

First year coach Dave Farrell says, “Once this group learned the system and started using their athleticism, they have come along nicely. This group has all the parts a good basketball team needs and they play unselfishly. They continue to work hard and are still improving daily.”

Lady Raiders posting great season at 17-2

The 2011-12 Lady Raiders basketball team of Riverfield Academy has bolted out of the gate with a 17-2 record under first year head coach Dave Farrell.

Taking the team after school had started back in September, Farrell installed a high-pressure defensive attack which has paid big dividends so far.

“This group of young ladies has been exceptional in their development” Farrell said. “Since the first day of conditioning, they have done everything I’ve asked with a great attitude. They work very hard and are reaping the benefits right now.”

Raiders growing into season

This year’s varsity Raider basket ball team is currently at 2-5 in district play.

Their record is not quite as good as they had hoped for but they have improved as the season has progressed. The team is also small in number this year with some young players. The Raiders are coached by Chris Winstead and consists of eight players. There are three seniors, Drew Horne, Rob Simmons and Logan Cantu; three juniors, Ben Sylvestri, Will Frith and Max Dark; one sophomore, Patrick Pelley; and one freshman, Marc Simmons.

JV Raiders having good year

The junior varsity Riverfield Academy Raider basketball team is doing exceptionally well this season with a current record of 11-5.

The team is coached by Rob Newsom and consists of five freshmen, four eighth graders and five seventh graders. The freshmen are Marc Simmons, Brennan Morris, Joseph Morris, Massey Thames and Stone Reeves. The eighth graders include Noah Wroten, Brennan Shelton, Cole Morris, and Luke Senn. Rounding out the team are seventh graders Matt Senn, Turner Bridges, Nathan Barham, Mathew Weems and Colin Black.

Lady Hornets now 26-0

The Rayville Junior High Hornets are now 26-0 following their victories at the Baton Rouge Regional tournament Dec. 22-23.

The Lady Hornets defeated Southeast 37-9.

Leading scorers were Micaela Wilson with 12 points, Shamari Franklin with nine points and Emonni Baker with seven points.

In their game against Westdale, the Lady Hornets scored a 45-11 victory.

Top scorers for Rayville in that game were Bridgette Keys with 16 points, Michaela Wilson with 13 points and Shamari Franklin with eight points.

DHS powerlifters win

Delhi High School’s boys powerlifting team took first place during the Natchez meet recently.

We were second last year, but we had more talent,” Delhi Coach Jesse Esters said. “The smaller guys really stepped up their game and pulled it off.”

First place winners were Jaquarius Tillery scoring 775 pounds, Solon Dixon

(790), Marc Loyd (880), Dylan Jackson (1,200) and Raphael Washington (1,165).

Second place finishers were Asante Griffin (770), Leggarion Rogers (760), Davius Thomas (990) and Corey Williams (1055).
