RHS Army JROTC competes in JR Olympics

The Rayville High Army JROTC Rifle Team competed in the 2010 National 3-Position Air Rifle Junior Olympics in Anniston, Ala., on July 11-13.

Over 150 athletes from throughout the United States competed during this match. Each of these athletes must have competed and placed at the state level prior to competing in this event.

Mangham student heading to national rodeo finals

After a week of competition at the Louisiana High School Rodeo Association Finals in Gonzales in June, one local teen is headed to Gillette, Wyoming.

Justin Gray, a 2010 Mangham High School graduate has earned a position on the Louisiana state high school rodeo team and will be traveling to Gillette to compete at the 62nd Annual National High School Finals Rodeo in the Bareback competition.

Operation Dry Water this weekend

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Law Enforcement Division (LDWF/LED) agents will take part in this weekend’s Operation Dry Water, a nationally coordinated effort focusing on increased boating safety.
From June 25 through 27, agents will be out in force patrolling state waterways for boat operators whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state limit of .08% Operation Dry Water includes increased patrols as well as boater education.

NEW ORLEANS – Marking the opening of hurricane season, former New Orleans Saints Super Bowl linebacker Scott Fujita and the America’s WETLAND Foundation (AWF) have teamed up to heighten awareness and build support for restoring Louisiana’s eroding coastline.
As part of a public service announcement campaign, AWF is launching a text-messaging drive to support volunteer planting and restoration projects in Louisiana’s marshes after the oil spill.

Monroe Strokers win USSSA state championship

Matthew Weems and Austin Salsbury, both of Richland Parish, are members of the Monroe Strokers 10AA USSSA travel team located in Monroe.

The Strokers traveled to Pineville at the Ward 9 Sports Complex to compete in the Louisiana State Championship on Friday.

In pool play Friday, Matthew Weems pitched 2 innings in a decisive 23-4 win over the Marksville Muskrats.

The Shreveport Outlaws were the next victim for the Strokers in a 14-2 win. That victory gave the Strokers the #1 seed in the tournament entering into elimination play.

Riverfield Raiders take state championship

The Riverfield Academy Raiders claimed their first baseball championship in 32 years last Thursday with an exciting 5-3 victory over the Bayou Academy Colts.

Head coach Joe Meeks' third baseball title was perhaps his sweetest as the Raiders finished in style wit a 29-3 record for the year. With the win, Riverfield swept the series two games to none, leaving no doubt who the best team was this 2010 season.
